Yu Xia Ge 御虾阁: The Cheapest $1.80 Prawn Noodles in Singapore That Truly Surprised Me!

When I first heard that Yu Xia Ge 御虾阁 was selling a bowl of prawn noodles for just $1.80, I honestly didn’t expect much. At that price, I thought the broth would be diluted and the portion would be tiny. It completely exceeded my expectations.

The first sip of the prawn broth completely changed my impression. The soup was rich, naturally sweet from the prawns, and packed with flavour. Even better, the portion was very reasonable for just $1.80. It’s hard to believe they’re offering such a quality bowl at this price, and I honestly wonder if the boss is making any profit from this promotion.

Yu Xia Ge $1.80 Prawn Noodles

The $1.80 prawn noodles are limited to one bowl per customer at Yu Xia Ge, and I’m not sure when this promotion will end. If you’ve been thinking of trying it, don’t wait too long!

Yu Xia Ge Pork Rib Prawn Noodles

Besides the Yu Xia Ge $1.80 promotional bowl, I also ordered their Pork Rib Prawn Noodles, and it turned out to be one of my favourites.

The pork ribs have been simmered for hours until they become incredibly soft and tender. The meat literally melts in your mouth with every bite while still retaining its rich pork flavour. If you’re someone who loves fall-off-the-bone pork ribs, this is definitely the bowl to order.

Extra Large Prawn Noodles

We have also ordered the Extra Large Prawn Noodles at Yu Xia Ge. The king prawn was impressively large. The prawn is about the size of a spoon and had a firm, fresh texture.

I also added prawn paste, which had a delightful texture that was both bouncy and soft. It paired perfectly with the flavourful broth.

Claypot Laksa

Their Claypot Laksa was another pleasant surprise.

The claypot was generously filled with ingredients including prawns, clams, abalone (Gui Fei Bao), tau pok and vegetables. The laksa gravy had a nice consistency which is not overly thick nor watery and delivered a satisfying balance of coconut richness and spice.

Personally, I think adding a little more laksa leaves would make it even more fragrant, but it was still an enjoyable bowl overall.

The Hidden Star at Yu Xia Ge is Yellow Fish Fishcake

What impressed me the most wasn’t actually the noodles; it was the Yellow Fish Fishcake.

Made from yellow fish, the fishcake was incredibly flavourful, naturally sweet and juicy. Normally, I don’t enjoy the skin on fish cakes, but this one completely changed my mind. The skin was amazingly thin with a slight crispness, while the inside remained soft and packed with fresh fish flavour.

This is one side dish that you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

Fried King Oyster Mushrooms

Another snack worth ordering is the Fried King Oyster Mushrooms.

Each piece was fried until golden and crispy on the outside while remaining juicy and tender inside. It’s simple but done really well, making it a great side dish to share.

Barley

To complete the meal, I ordered their homemade barley, which was refreshing and not overly sweet. It is just the way I like it.

Great for Small Gatherings

If you’re planning to dine with family or friends, Yu Xia Ge also has a private room that can accommodate around 8 to 10 people. It’s a nice option if you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply prefer a more private dining experience.

Final Thoughts

It’s rare to find a place that offers such great value without compromising on quality. While the $1.80 prawn noodles may be what attracts most customers, the rest of the menu proves that Yu Xia Ge is much more than just a budget-friendly promotion.

From the melt-in-your-mouth pork ribs and fresh extra-large prawns to the hearty claypot laksa and the unforgettable yellow fish cake, every dish exceeded my expectations.

If you’re looking for delicious prawn noodles at an affordable price, Yu Xia Ge is definitely worth adding to your food list. If you’re looking for another budget-friendly bowl of prawn noodles, you can also check out Lai Hiang Pork Rib Prawn Mee at Pek Kio Hawker Centre.
