Ah Ma Teochew Kuih: 5 Irresistible Bites You Cannot Miss in JB

My trip to Johor Bahru itinerary normally will include Ah Ma Teochew Kuih (阿嬷潮州糕). Tucked along Jalan Trus, this charming breakfast spot is the kind of place that stops you in your tracks the moment you walk in, it feels like stumbling into a grandmother’s kitchen that somehow got a tasteful aesthetic upgrade. Neatly arranged trays of handmade Teochew kuih fill the display, each piece soft, chewy, and carrying flavours passed down through generations. The moment I stepped inside, I knew this was not going to be a quick visit.

What’s on the Menu

The selection covers both savoury and sweet, giving me plenty of reasons to order more than I planned. On the savoury end, classics like chive kuih and yam cake deliver that comforting, familiar depth you’d expect from well-made traditional kuih. Both are simple, unpretentious, and deeply satisfying.

The Must-Orders at Ah Ma Teochew Kuih

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih-Golden Bun Oh Ni (Yam Paste)

The Golden Bun Oh Ni was arguably the star of my visit. A crispy fried bun filled generously with yam paste, it delivered that satisfying molten-lava moment with every bite which is warm, indulgent, and wonderfully messy. I paired it with the Ah Ma Signature Coffee, a bold traditional kopi blended with chocolate that lands somewhere between a classic kopi and a mocha, but with its own distinct and robust character. That combination alone made the entire trip worthwhile.

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih-Yam Kuih

The Yam Kuih was another standout for me, elevated by a crown of crispy fried shallots and freshly chopped scallions that added both texture and fragrance. I could have easily ordered two portions without any regret.

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih-Teochew Rice Kuih

Start from the top, the Teochew Rice Kuih was soft and moist throughout, carrying a rich savoury depth without ever feeling heavy or dry.

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih-Onde Onde

Moving on, the Onde Onde offers a delightful contrast. Generously coated in grated coconut, these bite-sized glutinous rice balls are soft and chewy on the outside, with a signature burst of sweet, fragrant gula melaka (palm sugar). I have always loved onde onde, and this version did not disappoint at all.

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih-Peanut Ang Ku Kuih

Lastly, rounding things out nicely was the Peanut Ang Ku Kuih which is chewy, nutty, and thoroughly satisfying.

More Than Just Kuih

What I appreciated most was that Ah Ma Teochew Kuih isn’t just a kuih stall. It’s a proper breakfast destination. The menu also features Teochew porridge, nasi lemak, and traditional local kopi, making it easy for me to put together a full, unhurried morning meal. I found myself sitting longer than expected, simply soaking in the atmosphere and going back for seconds. If you enjoy the kind of Malaysian hawker-style breakfasts that feel both grounding and generous, this place checks every box.

What makes it even better? The pricing is genuinely affordable, which made over-ordering feel almost justified.

Plan Your Visit

Ah Ma Teochew Kuih opens daily at 7:30am until 5:00pm, except on Mondays when they’re closed. I’d recommend arriving early for the best selection, as popular items tend to move quickly on weekends.
