Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay is one of the few places that still preserves the true traditional taste of handmade Nyonya kueh, and even our Grab driver highly recommended it as a must-visit spot for authentic flavours in Penang.
Hidden within the heritage streets of George Town, this humble spot has been operating for generations and has even earned recognition on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list multiple years in a row. One of the most unique things about this place is the entrance experience itself.

Before reaching the seating area, you actually walk through the real working kitchen where the kuehs are prepared fresh daily. The aroma of coconut milk, pandan leaves, and steamed glutinous rice instantly fills the air. Watching the staff handcraft each piece right in front of you made the experience feel incredibly authentic. It was almost like visiting a living Nyonya heritage workshop instead of just a cafe.

Once we looked at the menu, we honestly wanted to order everything. Every item looked colourful, traditional, and freshly made. Eventually, we decided on a huge spread so we could try as many classic Nyonya treats as possible.
My 3 Favourites at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay
1. Pulai Ta Tai
Pulai Tai Tai topped with kaya, which quickly became one of my personal favourites. The vibrant blue glutinous rice was soft, slightly chewy, and fragrant from the butterfly pea flower colouring. But the real magic came from the thick layer of kaya on top. The creamy coconut jam added richness and sweetness that elevated the entire kueh beautifully.

2. Nonya Chang (Rice Dumping)
The famous Nonya Chang at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay, a traditional rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. The striking blue rice immediately caught our attention. Inside, the savoury filling was flavourful and aromatic with a satisfying balance of sweet and salty notes. It felt hearty yet comforting, almost like eating a treasured family recipe passed down through generations.

3. Kueh Pie Tee
The Kueh Pie Tee was another standout item at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay. These crispy little shells were filled with turnip, vegetables, and topped with flavourful garnishes. Every bite gave a satisfying crunch followed by savoury sweetness from the filling. It was light yet incredibly addictive.

Other Orders Worth Trying at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay
For something more classic to try at Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay, we had the Pulut Inti. This traditional snack may look simple, but the combination of steamed glutinous rice topped with sweet coconut was absolutely delicious. The coconut topping was fragrant and fresh, while the rice remained soft and slightly sticky.
The Kueh Koci and Kueh Koci Santan were equally enjoyable. Both featured chewy glutinous rice skin filled with sweet coconut filling, but the santan version had an additional creamy richness from the coconut milk coating. The texture was wonderfully soft and comforting.

Lastly, we tried the Kueh Kosoi, another traditional favourite with a soft texture and rich gula melaka fragrance. Paired with freshly grated coconut, it delivered a perfect balance of sweetness and aroma.

To complete the meal, we ordered an iced kopi and a lemongrass ginger drink. The kopi was rich and bold, while the lemongrass ginger drink was refreshing and soothing, especially after all the sweet treats.

There is a reason why Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay continues to attract both locals and tourists after so many decades. Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay is not just about food. It is about preserving heritage, tradition, and craftsmanship through every handmade kueh. If you are visiting Penang and love exploring authentic local flavours, this is truly an experience you should not miss.
