Chop Tiang Bee Melaka: From Humble Recycling Shop to a Stunning Heritage Cafe

Chop Tiang Bee is a charming heritage café in Melaka that beautifully blends history, tradition, and creativity. Having been passed down through generations, the family business has evolved from its humble beginnings as a recycling shop into a cafe. Rather than leaving its past behind, the family has carefully preserved the building’s rich heritage while transforming it into a warm and welcoming dining cafe.

The moment I stepped inside, I could immediately feel the nostalgic atmosphere. The café is filled with traditional elements that remind visitors of old Melaka. Wooden furniture, vintage decorations, antique displays, and classic architectural details create a cosy environment that feels both familiar and welcoming.

At the same time, modern comforts such as air-conditioning, comfortable seating, and stylish lighting make it an enjoyable place to relax with family and friends.

One of the highlights of visiting Chop Tiang Bee is getting to enjoy its wide selection of dishes that beautifully combine traditional flavours with modern cafe favourites. The menu offers something for everyone, whether you are looking for comforting local dishes or Western-inspired meals.

My Orders from Chop Tiang Bee

To start our meal at Chop Tiang Bee, we ordered the Salt and Pepper Squid as a side dish. The squid was fried until perfectly crispy on the outside. What I enjoyed most was that it wasn’t overly oily, allowing the natural sweetness of the squid. The light coating of salt and pepper seasoning gave it just the right amount of flavour without being too salty.

For one of the mains at Chop Tiang Bee, I chose the Prawn Garlic Spaghetti. The spaghetti wascoated evenly in a mild buttery sauce infused with fragrant garlic. The garlic flavour was noticeable but not overpowering, making the dish enjoyable even for those who prefer lighter flavours. The fresh prawns added a natural sweetness that paired beautifully with the buttery pasta.

We also decided to try one of the chef’s recommended dishes, the Traditional Herbal Mee Sua Soup. This turned out to be one of the most comforting dishes we had. The bowl came with a generous chicken drumstick and a perfectly cooked egg. The soup was filled with the natural aroma of Chinese herbs and spices, creating a rich and nourishing broth. Despite its herbal flavour, the soup was not too strong, making it pleasant and easy to enjoy.

Another signature dish at Chop Tiang Bee was the House Special Vermicelli. The vermicelli was stir-fried with the cafe’s signature seasoning, giving it a savoury, fragrant flavour that was both familiar and satisfying. It was served with fresh prawns, fish cake slices, and vegetables, making it a well-balanced meal. A sunny-side-up egg sat beautifully on top, and once the runny yolk was mixed into the vermicelli, it added a creamy richness that elevated the overall flavour.

To end our meal on a sweet note, we shared the Burnt Cheesecake for dessert. The slice was surprisingly generous, making it perfect for sharing. The cheesecake had a rich and creamy texture with a wonderfully cheesy flavour that wasn’t overly sweet. The beautifully caramelised top added a light smoky aroma, creating a lovely contrast to the smooth and velvety centre.

Of course, no cafe visit is complete without drinks. We ordered a hot chocolate, a cup of coffee, and a refreshing lime water. The hot chocolate was smooth, rich, and comforting, while the coffee offered the familiar aroma and taste that coffee lovers would appreciate. The lime water was light, refreshing, and perfect for cleansing the palate after such a satisfying meal.

Although Chop Tiang Bee is located just off the famous Jonker Street at Melaka, it can be quite easy to miss. Tucked away along one of the small lanes, the cafe doesn’t have a flashy storefront that immediately catches your attention.
