Whenever I drive past Hong Chang Eating House, I can’t help but notice the constant crowd. Whether it’s during dinner hours or late into the night, the restaurant is almost always packed with hungry diners.

What’s even more impressive is that it’s tucked away at the corner of a row of standalone shophouses near a busy junction, where parking can be quite a challenge. Despite the limited parking and slightly inconvenient location, people continue to flock here every day, making me curious to find out what keeps everyone coming back.

Highlights of Hong Chang Eating House
The undeniable star of the menu at Hong Chang Eating House is the Frog Claypot Porridge. Served piping hot in a traditional claypot, the porridge has a smooth, silky consistency that is both comforting and satisfying.
Claypot Porridge (Small Size – $3)

Ginger Spring Onion Frog Claypot (2 frogs – $16)
I have ordered the frog meat to be cooked with Ginger Spring Onion, the meat is cooked until tender while remaining juicy, allowing it to absorb the rich, savoury sauce beautifully.

When you mix the 2 together, Every spoonful is packed with flavour, making it a hearty meal that is especially enjoyable on rainy days or during late-night supper.

Sambal Squid (Small – $11)
The sambal squid was one of the standout dishes during our meal. The squid remained tender with a pleasant bite, while the sambal delivered a rich, aromatic flavour with just the right amount of heat. The savoury sambal will pair wonderfully with rice. The sambal instantly reminded me of my mum’s homemade chilli, with its rich aroma, balanced spice, and comforting homemade flavour.

Kailan (Big – $11)
We also ordered a plate of kailan, which was cooked perfectly. The vegetables retained their crisp texture while remaining fresh and vibrant. Lightly seasoned, it provided a refreshing balance to the richer dishes on the table.

Fried Chicken Wing (7 pieces – $8)
Another dish that impressed me was the fried chicken wing. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary side order, but one bite was enough to understand why many diners recommend it.

The skin was wonderfully crispy, while the meat inside remained juicy and tender. It was well-marinated with flavour throughout, making it difficult to stop at just one piece.

Muar Otah ($8)
The Muar otah came in a generous portion, making it great for sharing. However, I personally found the texture to be a little on the dry side for my liking. While it still had a pleasant smoky aroma and savoury taste, I would have preferred it to be slightly more moist to enhance the overall eating experience.

No meal is complete without trying one of Hong Chang Eating House homemade refreshing drinks. We ordered the Ginger Honey Lemon ($2.80) and Pineapple Honey Lemon ($2.80), and both were equally refreshing, making them the perfect companions to the hearty claypot porridge and flavourful dishes. The Ginger Honey Lemon had a pleasant spicy warmth from the ginger, balanced by the sweetness of honey and the tanginess of fresh lemon. If you’re not a fan of ginger, I’d recommend the Pineapple Honey Lemon instead. It was fruity, slightly tangy, and incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Besides these two, Hong Chang Eating House also offers a variety of other homemade drinks, giving diners plenty of options to complement their meal.

One thing I particularly appreciate about Hong Chang Eating House is its operating hours. The restaurant opens daily from 3:00 PM until 2:00 AM, making it an excellent choice whether you’re planning an early dinner, a supper gathering with friends, or simply craving a comforting bowl of porridge after a long day. Just take note that they are closed every Monday, so it’s best to plan your visit accordingly.

Because of its popularity, you should expect a crowd at Hong Chang Eating House, especially during dinner. As the parking space is quite limited, finding a parking lot can also require a little patience, particularly during peak periods.
Final Thoughts
Hong Chang Eating House is more than just a place famous for frog porridge. From the comforting claypot porridge to the flavourful sambal sotong, fresh kailan, and crispy chicken wings, every dish complemented one another beautifully.
