Whenever I don’t feel like having a heavy dinner with lots of dishes, Sum Dim Sum (心点心) is one of the places I enjoy visiting. Dim sum is always one of my favourite choices because I can order a variety of small plates and enjoy different flavours without feeling too full. During my recent visit, I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant’s creative combinations and unique takes on traditional favourites. Many of the dishes offered an interesting twist, making the meal both enjoyable and memorable.

My Dining Experience
After we were seated at Sum Dim Sum, a friendly staff member came over and handed us a QR code to place our order. They also took the time to recommend a few popular dishes on the menu, which made it easier for us to decide what to try.

Once we had submitted our order, the staff returned with a printed list of the dishes we ordered along with a mini 28-minute sand timer. They explained that the timer was part of their service challenge and served as a reminder for the team to prepare and serve the food before all the sand ran out. I thought it was a fun and unique idea that showed their commitment to serving customers promptly while adding a little excitement to the dining experience.

What I Ordered at Sum Dim Sum
Pan Fried Carrot Cake
The first dish that stood out to me was the Pan Fried Carrot Cake. Instead of serving it the usual way, it was topped with crispy fried ikan bilis. At first, I wasn’t sure how the combination would taste, but after the first bite, I really enjoyed it. The carrot cake was soft, while the ikan bilis added a crunchy texture and a fragrant aroma that blended surprisingly well. It gave the dish an extra layer of flavour and made it different from the typical carrot cake found elsewhere.

XL Tiffany Blue Har Gow
Another favourite of mine from Sum Dim Sum was the XL Tiffany Blue Har Gow. I loved the vibrant blue colour of the wrapper, which made the dish look so attractive on the table.

Beyond its appearance, the skin was stretchy, chewy, and had just the right thickness. Inside were fresh, plump prawns that were naturally sweet and juicy. It became one of the highlights of my meal.

Wolfberry Mushroom Siew Mai
I also ordered the Wolfberry Mushroom Siew Mai at Sum Dim Sum, and it did not disappoint. The filling was juicy and bouncy, with a nice texture that I really enjoyed. The mushrooms added extra flavour, while the wolfberries brought a slight hint of sweetness that complemented the savoury meat well.

Pandan Crispy Pork Bun
One dish that really surprised me was the Pandan Crispy Pork Bun. Unlike the usual Crispy Pork Bun, this version had a skin infused with pandan fragrance. The aroma was noticeable as soon as I took a bite.

The outside was lightly crispy with the pandan flavour, while the pork filling inside was sweet and juicy. It was Sum Dim Sum’s creative twist on a classic dim sum favourite.

Salted Egg Sesame Ball
The Salted Egg Sesame Ball was another unique item. The outside was crispy and coated with fragrant sesame seeds, giving it a lovely nutty aroma.

Once I took a bite, the rich salted egg lava filling flowed out, creating a delicious combination of crunchy, nutty, and creamy textures. Be careful when eating it fresh, as the molten filling can be very hot. I’d recommend taking small bites and letting it cool slightly before enjoying it. So far, Sum Dim Sum is the only place where I’ve come across this combination.

Traditional Savoury Pork Rice Dumpling

Since I visited Sum Dim Sum close to the Dumpling Festival, I also had the chance to try their Traditional Savoury Pork Rice Dumpling, which was available for a limited time until 19 June 2026.

Wrapped in fragrant bamboo leaves, the dumpling was packed with lean and fatty pork, salted egg yolk, and beans. Every bite was rich and flavourful, with a nice balance of textures from the tender meat and soft glutinous rice.

Sum Dim Sum also offers several other dumpling varieties giving diners more choices to suit their preferences.

Bamboo Roll with Oyster Sauce
Another item from Sum Dim Sum is Bamboo Roll with Oyster Sauce.

The bamboo roll was soft, tender, and filled with fresh, juicy ingredients. Paired with the savoury oyster sauce, it was simple yet satisfying and allowed the freshness of the filling to shine through.

Prawn Rice Roll with Asparagus

I also highly recommend the Prawn Rice Roll with Asparagus at Sum Dim Sum. The rice roll skin was thin, soft, and slightly chewy, wrapping around sweet prawns with a little asparagus. The Hong Kong-style sauce added just the right amount of savoury flavour without overpowering the ingredients.

If you enjoy silky and thin-skinned rice rolls like I do, you may also want to check out Pin Wei, which is another place known for excellent chee cheong fun.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Sum Dim Sum. I liked how they combined traditional recipes with creative ideas, giving familiar dishes a refreshing twist. From the fragrant ikan bilis carrot cake and colourful Tiffany Blue Har Gow to the pandan pork bun and crispy salted egg sesame ball, every dish brought something unique to the table. Sum Dim Sum is definitely a place worth visiting.
