Sunway Hotel Big Box is a convenient 4-star family-friendly hotel I will consider for a family getaway to Johor Bahru. It is located in Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, which is near Tuas Checkpoint, making it a practical choice for families travelling from Singapore.
Pendas Cafe at Sunway Hotel Big Box
Pendas Cafe offers a breakfast buffet that has a wide variety of choices, covering both local and international favourites. There was plenty to choose from, so it was easy to find something whether you prefer a hearty breakfast or something lighter to start your morning.
I did arrive a little late for breakfast, so unfortunately, some of the dishes had already been taken away or were running low. Even so, there was still a good selection available, and I managed to enjoy several dishes that stood out to me.
One of my favourites was the Pain Au Chocolat. The chocolate-filled pastry was a nice treat to have alongside my morning coffee and offered something different from the more savoury breakfast selections. If you enjoy pastries in the morning, this was definitely one I would recommend trying.
Of course, I could not miss the Nasi Lemak. This Malaysian breakfast staple is always a favourite of mine and having it as part of a hotel breakfast buffet made it easy to enjoy a familiar local flavour. It was a satisfying choice and a nice representation of the local breakfast options available.
The chicken siew mai was another favourite. These bite-sized dim sum pieces were convenient to pick up from the buffet and made a great addition to my breakfast plate.
I also enjoyed the comforting beehoon soup. There was something particularly satisfying about having a warm bowl of noodles in the morning.
I also had a bowl of warm porridge, which was another comforting choice to warm my tummy in the morning. To add more flavour and texture, I topped it with some ikan bilis from the nasi lemak station. The crispy ikan bilis added a nice savoury crunch to the soft, warm porridge, making it even more enjoyable.
The egg station is located outdoors, so the chef has to prepare the eggs under the hot weather. What impressed me most was watching the chef cook the omelette without using a spatula. It was quite an impressive technique, as he skilfully controlled and folded the omelette directly while cooking.
Despite working outdoors in the heat, the chef remained attentive and prepared the eggs fresh to order. I also found the sunny-side-up egg quite amusing, as the yolks looked like two little eyes, almost as if the egg had a cute face!
Overall, although I arrived a little late and missed out on some of the earlier buffet selections, I still had an enjoyable breakfast at Pendas Cafe. The variety was impressive, with a good mix of local and international choices to cater to different tastes.
