New Lane Food Street Penang was the last thing we expected to end up at right after checking into the hotel but somehow, it turned out to be the best decision of the night.
We had just arrived, luggage still by our side, and that familiar travel hunger started kicking in. Not the kind of hunger you can ignore, but the kind that makes you want something fast, local, and deeply satisfying.
So, we approached the hotel reception with a simple question: “Is there any good food nearby?” Without hesitation, the staff gave us a recommendation by telling us “Just head down the nearby street. You’ll find good food there.”
We thought it would be a small row of stalls or a local coffeeshop, but we were wrong. It was New Lane Food Street Penang.
Food Adventure Night at New Lane Food Street
As soon as we arrived, the atmosphere completely shifted. New Lane Food Street transforms every evening into a lively open-air food street, buzzing with energy, smoke, and the unmistakable aroma of wok-fired dishes.
Stalls line both sides of the street, each one competing for attention with sizzling sounds, flashing lights, and long queues of hungry diners. The air is thick with the smell of frying noodles, grilled meats, and sweet desserts being prepared on the spot.
At that moment, we knew we were not just here for dinner, but we were here for a full-on food adventure.
The Classic of Penang New Lane Food Street
One of the first dishes that immediately stands out is Char Kway Teow as they use charcoal to cook. Watching it being cooked alone is already an experience. High heat, rapid tossing, and flames licking the wok create that unmistakable smoky flavour known as wok hei. The noodles come out glossy, slightly charred, and packed with prawns, eggs, and bean sprouts.

There are also plenty of other local favourites worth trying at New Lane Food Street Penang, beyond the usual highlights. You can find fragrant fish otak, wrapped and grilled to smoky perfection with a soft, spicy fish paste that melts in your mouth.
The chicken hor fun is another comforting option, featuring silky flat noodles drenched in a smooth, savoury gravy with tender slices of chicken.

If you are a fan of rich, flavourful bites, the oyster omelette is also a must-try. It comes crispy at the edges yet slightly gooey in the centre, packed with fresh oysters that add a briny, umami punch to every bite. Each of these dishes adds even more variety to the already impressive spread of street food, making the entire food adventure at New Lane feel like a true food paradise.

Every stall tells a story of Penang’s food culture: bold, flavourful, and proudly unpretentious.
The Star of the Show: The Legendary Lor Bak Stall
But if there is one stall that truly steals the spotlight, it is the legendary Lor Bak stall.
This place is not just popular but it is also an institution at New Lane Food Street Penang. Operating for decades, it continues to draw long queues every single night, and after tasting it, we understand why.
The Lor Bak is perfectly seasoned with five-spice powder, wrapped neatly in bean curd skin, and deep-fried until it reaches a golden, shattering crisp.
The first bite is unforgettable.
Crispy on the outside, juicy and flavourful on the inside. The seasoning is rich but balanced, and when paired with its dipping sauce, it becomes dangerously addictive. It is the kind of dish that makes you silently reach for another piece without hesitation.

Pardon the lor bak picture. We were too hungry, and it was way too delicious to wait
A Street That Feels Alive At Night
What makes New Lane Food Street Penang special is not just the food, it is the entire atmosphere. Locals and tourists sit side by side, sharing tables, laughing over plates of food, and chasing down their favourite stalls before things sell out.
