Restoran Sze Zai Hiong was an unexpected discovery during our recent short getaway to Johor Bahru. My family and I were staying at the Sheraton JB Hotel and decided to visit SKS City Mall JBCC, where the kids spent a good amount of time enjoying themselves at the indoor playground. After all that running, climbing, and playing, everyone was feeling hungry, so we started looking around for a place to have dinner. That’s when we came across Restoran Sze Zai Hiong, which happened to be celebrating its grand opening.
One pleasant surprise was that Restoran Sze Zai Hiong was offering a 15% grand opening promotion, making the meal even more worthwhile.
Not long after serving our drinks, one of the staff members approached our table and apologetically informed us that they were facing an issue in the kitchen due to a gas supply problem. They asked whether we would be willing to wait a little longer while they checked on the situation. While this was certainly unexpected, we appreciated their honesty and proactive communication.
Fortunately, about ten minutes later, another staff member returned with good news. The kitchen had managed to resolve the issue, and our food would be prepared as planned. Before long, the dishes started arriving at our table, much to the delight of our hungry family.
Dishes We Ordered at Restoran Sze Zai Hiong
The first dish we tried was the Hong Kong Style Steamed Fish. This turned out to be one of the highlights of the meal. The fish was fresh and cooked perfectly, with tender and delicate flesh that practically melted in the mouth. What really elevated the dish was the savoury sauce. Rich in flavour without being overly salty, it paired wonderfully with steamed rice and had everyone reaching for extra spoonfuls to drizzle over their rice.
Next came the Stir-Fried French Beans with Minced Pork. This minced pork added savoury depth.
We also ordered the Herbal Chicken, which was another enjoyable dish. The herbal broth carried a comforting fragrance and flavour without being overpowering. The chicken itself was tender and juicy, having absorbed the herbal essence beautifully. It was a comforting dish that felt both nourishing and flavourful.
Another crowd-pleaser was the Homemade Hotplate Tofu. Served sizzling on a hotplate, the tofu was silky smooth on the inside while being packed with flavour from the accompanying sauce. The combination of textures and the aromatic gravy made it a dish that paired exceptionally well with rice.
To complete the meal, we ordered the Deep-Fried Pumpkin Pie.
Despite the initial hiccup with the kitchen’s gas supply, the staff of Restoran Sze Zai Hiong handled the situation professionally and kept us informed throughout. More importantly, the quality of the food made the short wait worthwhile. Every dish we ordered was enjoyable, and the portions were suitable for sharing among the family.
Our visit to Restoran Sze Zai Hiong turned out to be an unexpected highlight of our Johor Bahru trip. What started as a simple search for food after the kids’ playground session became a memorable family meal filled with delicious dishes and warm service. If you happen to be visiting SKS City Mall JBCC and are looking for a satisfying Chinese meal, Restoran Sze Zai Hiong is certainly worth considering.
