The moment you step into Great Nanyang, there’s this warm and familiar feeling especially if you’re in your late 50s or older, almost like reliving memories from the past. That was exactly how Great Nanyang at 111 Somerset felt to me. The nostalgic flavours, comforting vibes, and a dining experience that brings back the good old days.
The Vibe at Great Nanyang
Before I even talk about the food, let me tell you about the decoration. Walking into Great Nanyang is like stepping back in time. The walls are lined with a massive collection of Khong Guan biscuit tins — the kind your grandparents used to keep at home. Seeing them all stacked up together instantly brought back so many childhood memories.
But the best part? Their super cool Milo tin pulley system. Instead of a regular cash register for their popsicles, they run an honour system where a Milo tin zips along a pulley overhead. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and honestly it’s something you don’t see anywhere else. The whole place feels like a movie set with vintage biscuit tins, old glass soda bottles, and that iconic Milo tin swinging past. It’s nostalgic, cosy, and yes, absolutely Instagram-worthy.
What to Order at Great Nanyang
Prawn Noodle
Now let’s talk about the food. I ordered the Prawn Mee, and it was really good. The broth was rich, tasty, and full of flavour.
The prawns were fresh and paired so well with the noodles. It reminded me of the classic old-school hawker-style prawn mee. It is simple, authentic, and satisfying. No fancy plating, just a hearty bowl of noodles done right.
If you love prawn mee, you’ll definitely enjoy this. It has that traditional flavour that feels comforting and nostalgic with every bite.
Great Nanyang Tuna Thick Toast
This one was such a nice surprise. The Great Nanyang Tuna Thick Toast is their modern twist on a classic Nanyang snack, and I really enjoyed it. The thick toast was crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, and topped generously with savoury tuna.
The tuna filling was flavourful without being too heavy, and it matched perfectly with the toast. It may look simple, but every bite was satisfying and comforting. Pair it with a hot cup of coffee and soft-boiled eggs, and you’ve got the perfect Nanyang-style breakfast experience.
The soft-boiled eggs look perfectly done, the yolks are still silky and slightly runny, while the whites are soft and just set. Topped with a drizzle of soy sauce, they look extra comforting and classic.
Is Great Nanyang Worth a Visit?
Absolutely yes. Great Nanyang is more than just a café, it’s an experience. The food is good and the place looks amazing, and the whole experience feels really special. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
